Step 1 – DUNS Registration

Data Universal Numbering System (“DUNS”) Number

DUNS Number – The first step in registering to become an eligible federal contractor is acquiring a Data Universal Numbering System (“DUNS”) Number for your organization. DUNS Numbers are nine-digit organizational identification numbers issued by Dun and Bradstreet. With the correct approach, you are able to obtain a DUNS Number at no direct cost from Dun and Bradstreet.

Step 2 – SAM Registration

System for Award Management System

Once your DUNS Number is issued, your next step is to register in the federal government’s System for Award Management (“SAM”) federal contractor database.

The SAM Registration process

consist of 5 distinct sections.

1) Core Data

Core Company Information

List your Company Name, DUNS, CAGE code, TIN, General & Financial Information.

2) Assertions

Company Services

List the type of Goods and Services your company provides by identifying your primary and secondary NAICS codes.

3) Representations & Certifications

Small Business Size Status

Acceptance of Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) and the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) Clauses along with Small Business Size Status.

4) Points of Contact

Federal Points of Contact

List your company’s primary points of contact for government contracting officers to reach you regarding award opportunities.

5) SBA supplemental

Small Business Grants and Loans

Let the Small Business Association know the company is interested in grants and supplemental funding.

Once you begin, you will be assigned to a SAM Senior Registration Processing Specialist that will complete the SAM registration on your behalf. Through this process, the SAM Registration Specialist explains each section, asks you pertinent questions, and provides information about your business in the right context.

Step 3 – SBA/DSBS Registration

Dynamic Small Business Registration

By federal contracting standards, over 95% of U.S. businesses are considered “small”. Being small entitles your company to a number of strategic advantages in federal contracting. One of those advantages is being listed in the Small Business Administration’s (“SBA”) Dynamic Small Business Search (“DSBS”) market research database.

Federal buyers use this database to locate small businesses in various industries throughout the U.S. for contract fulfillment.

Step 4 – FedBiz Opps Registration

Registering for Federal Business Opportunities 

FedBizOpps (“FBO”) is the primary online system the federal government utilizes to post public notices about current and upcoming federal contracts. 

The federal government posts on average over 500 federal contracting notifications per day on this website.

As a newly registered client, your company will be properly registered on the FBO platform. Through this registration, you’ll receive daily notifications about federal contracting opportunities matching your primary industry and work location.
